Escapril/NaPoWriMo Day Fifteen

Today’s prompt: describe a smell. It would be insensible if I didn’t dedicate today’s poem to Notre Dame. The tragedy of a national landmark leaves the world grieving.

The Smell of Notre Dame’s Smoke –

Thick, heavy, and resonant.
I can smell the history,
Touch the ghost tales,
And taste the warm hue of stained glass
That’s already shattering
As the flesh of this hallowed structure
Is eaten alive.
The flames sloppily lick the ancient frame,
Until the only thing remaining
Is the smoke that carries
The mourning of a nation
Over the sea.
